One of the most common questions we get is: how much should I use, and how often? The honest answer is that it depends on your hair โ€” its texture, its needs, and which Batana Oil you're using. Getting this right makes a significant difference to your results.

Before we get into the how-to by hair type, here's the most important thing to know: we carry two distinct Batana Oils, and they are not interchangeable. The Heat Extracted (Pure Unrefined) is our more potent, intensive oil โ€” best suited to thicker, drier hair types. The Cold Pressed is lighter, gentler, and better suited to fine hair and daily use. Choosing the right one for your hair is the first step.

The quick guide

Fine or sensitive hair โ†’ Cold Pressed Batana Oil, applied to the scalp as a daily or alternate-day ritual.

4c, thick, natural or dry hair โ†’ Heat Extracted Batana Oil, used as a leave-in treatment or pre-wash. Fine hair can also use the Heat Extracted as an occasional pre-wash treatment โ€” just not as an everyday leave-in.

How to use โ€” by hair type

Fine or Low-Porosity Hair

Straight, wavy, or fine-textured hair that absorbs products slowly

Cold Pressed

Fine hair benefits most from the Cold Pressed Batana Oil โ€” its lighter texture absorbs without weighing hair down or leaving residue. Apply to the scalp as your primary focus; the scalp is where growth begins.

  • 1
Use 2โ€“3 drops only Less is always more with fine hair. Start with less than you think you need โ€” you can always add.
  • 2
Apply directly to the scalp Part the hair in sections and apply the oil directly to the scalp using your fingertips. There's no need to warm it first โ€” Cold Pressed absorbs at room temperature.
  • 3
Massage for 2โ€“3 minutes Use small circular motions across the scalp. This stimulates circulation to the follicle and helps the oil absorb evenly.
  • 4
Leave in โ€” no rinsing needed Apply on damp or dry hair. The lightweight texture means it can be used daily or every other day as part of your morning routine without needing to rinse.
Fine hair tip: avoid applying to the lengths and ends daily โ€” focus on the scalp. Add a small amount to the ends on wash day only if they feel particularly dry.

4c, Thick, Natural or High-Porosity Hair

Coily, kinky, or dense hair that requires deeper moisture and repair

Heat Extracted

The Heat Extracted Batana Oil is made for this hair type. Its richer, denser texture is exactly what coily and high-porosity hair needs โ€” it penetrates deeply, seals the cuticle, and stays in the hair rather than absorbing too quickly.

  • 1
Warm between your palms Take a small amount โ€” roughly the size of a 10p coin for medium-length hair โ€” and warm between your palms for 10โ€“15 seconds. This activates the oil and helps it spread evenly.
  • 2
Section your hair Divide into 4 sections. Working in sections ensures every part of the scalp receives the oil, not just the top layer.
  • 3
Massage into the scalp Use your fingertips to work the oil into the scalp with firm circular motions for 3โ€“5 minutes per section. Take your time here โ€” the massage is part of the treatment.
  • 4
Draw through the lengths and ends Use any remaining oil on your palms to coat the mid-lengths and ends. This is where 4c and natural hair tends to lose moisture first.
  • 5
Leave in overnight Cover with a silk scarf or bonnet and leave overnight for maximum penetration. Wash out the following morning with African Black Soap for a complete ritual.
4c hair tip: the oil can be used as a daily or every-other-day leave-in on the scalp. For a deeper treatment, apply more generously to the full length and leave overnight once or twice a week.

Fine Hair โ€” Occasional Deep Treatment

Using Heat Extracted as a pre-wash, not an everyday product

Heat Extracted ยท Pre-wash

Fine hair can benefit from the Heat Extracted oil โ€” but not as a leave-in. Used occasionally as a pre-wash treatment, it delivers a deeper level of scalp nourishment and repair than the Cold Pressed can provide day-to-day.

  • 1
Use sparingly โ€” even less than you think A few drops warmed between the palms is enough. Fine hair does not need volume โ€” it needs penetration.
  • 2
Apply to the scalp only Do not apply to the lengths or ends โ€” the heavier texture will weigh fine hair down. Focus entirely on the scalp.
  • 3
Leave for 30โ€“60 minutes, then wash This is a pre-wash treatment, not a leave-in. Use African Black Soap to cleanse thoroughly after โ€” it will remove the oil without stripping the scalp.
Frequency: once every 1โ€“2 weeks is enough for fine hair. Your daily ritual remains the Cold Pressed.
โœฆ

"Consistency over quantity. A few drops, used regularly, will always outperform a heavy application used once."

Whichever oil you're using, the principle is the same: start with less than you think you need, focus on the scalp, and give it time. Results are cumulative โ€” most customers notice meaningful change between weeks four and six of regular use.
